You're gonna find yourself someday, somehow....
To be true to the self is a step that, while in the right direction, is one that is terrifying. To be true to the self is to expose others to the thoughts that are buried deep in the mind, to acknowledge that faults of the personalty and the fears embedded in the heart.
Why do we chose to live in masks? Why do we chose to deny ourselves a way out? We have been created in the image of the creator, there is nothing to be afraid of except for the worsening of the human condition that will happen should we continue to live garbed in the robes that society has given us to wear.
Have you ever had the opportunity to create? Creating is something that I like to do through paint....I work and work to make the image match that which is in my mind. I'll work and work until it is just perfect and exactly what it was created to be. I think that's what God has done with each one of us. He has thought us through, he has not left one cell of ours without the potential of revealing that which he has created us to be.
As an artist, I couldn't imagine how I would feel if someone else tainted my painting, if someone misconstrued an image that I was trying to portray. I couldn't imagine how God feels....all of these beautiful human beings who hide what they were made to be. All of us who allow the calls of society to fade our original colors. We create these masks that we think portray who we think we were truly meant to be. I don't think we'll ever be happy behind these masks.
To try to be what everyone else wants us to be is denying the artist his display. Nature doesn't deny God his display, instead it relishes in it, volcanoes do not deny eruption, wind does not hold back its fury, the ocean does not give up it's consistency in order to please those on the shore. The flower does not refuse to bloom just because its petals might be different from the next daisy over. When we are true to ourselves, we are allowing the world to see the work of the master artist, when we are true to ourselves we are able to see the value and uniquness of who we are and relish in it.
Maybe someday society will get to the point where the pressures don't lie in looks or money, or the acquiring of material stuff. maybe someday Society will care about the inside, the thoughts and values a person holds. maybe someday the media will use the image of a woman and a book as sexual appeal instead of a woman in a bikini. Maybe someday media will use the image of a man with a paint brush and canvas, instead of a man and beer can in order to sell a product. Maybe someday we'll value the human being for its inner beauty instead of what it can acquire and/or look like...until then, in the words of Corinne Bailey Rae...
"Girl put your records on, play me your favorite song, you go ahead let you hair down,
sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams, you go ahead let your hair down,
you're gonna find yourself someday, somehow..."
